Looking Back at the Monkees Frontmans Brady Bunch Cameo (Video)

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia: she’s so charming, she can convince the likes of Davy Jones to sing at her prom.

Jones, the teen heartthrob and frontman of The Monkees, died of a heart attack Wednesday at the age of 66; besides a legacy of iconic music moments, such as the hit song “Daydream Believer,” the singer made a big impression with his appearance on The Brady Bunch, back when pop-star cameos on popular TV shows were more “event”-worthy and less frequent than they are today.

In 1971, Jones guest-starred on the classic sitcom as a version of himself in an episode entitled “Getting Davy Jones.” He performed his song “Girl,” and paid a surprise visit to the Brady household to see Marcia (Maureen McCormick), the president of the Fillmore Junior High Davy Jones Fan Club. After telling classmates she planned to get Jones to sing at the prom — see, he mailed her a letter, thereby raising false hopes — Marcia crashed his studio session in a futile attempt to make her dreams come true. (She got kicked out by his manager.)

But through the power of unrealistic sitcom writing, the happy-go-lucky, laid-back Jones was able to grant Marcia’ wish — and, o-m-g, be her date to the prom, too.
