Hailee Steinfeld, Spider-Verse Stars Highlight Writers

Hollywood’s hot labor summer (and fall) got a pointed mention at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards — one that came from the show’s writers.

Presenting the award for best motion picture screenplay, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Daniel Kaluuya, Hailee Steinfeld and Shameik Moore performed a scripted bit to highlight the importance of writers to the filmmaking process. The Writers Guild of America was on strike for 148 days in 2023 before securing significant gains in a new contract with studios and streamers.

“To demonstrate the importance of writers and writing, we asked that this segment be written not by writers, but by studio executives,” Kaluuya said, before awkwardly asking, “What is up, Shameik?”

“Not much, Daniel,” Moore replied. “How are you, Hailee?”

Steinfeld: “I am … relatable. I am enjoy the Golden Globs. Do you agree?”

After a couple more exchanges in the same vein, Moore wrapped up by saying, “Here are these nominations for movie writing, for the movies.” (Justine Triet and Arthur Harari won the award for Anatomy of a Fall.)

The Spider-Verse stars’ banter was the most pointed reference to strikes by writers and actors during the early portion of the Golden Globes telecast. Host Jo Koy didn’t mention the labor actions in his opening monologue, and aside from a passing reference by presenter Julia Garner, other people on stage in the early parts of the show also kept mum.
